Building a garden pond can be as inexpensive or costly, as you want to make it, with the formal pond being the most expensive. The reason being is that the formal pond usually ahs expensive concrete fountains and other features that add to the cost.
We can tell you that we service pond owners you have spent as little as $200 and as much as $20,000 and more constructing there water wonderland. Where you fit in all this is of course dependent on your budget. This is where we can help you save some money if money is an issue. We can also help you spend it all!
Most of our owners constructed the ponds themselves. Many are born do-it-yourselfers that don't mind getting their hands dirty while saving a chunk of change in the process. You can opt to contact a local installer or garden shop in your area for quotes if this isn't you. If you plan on using concrete and brick and don't know anything about concrete work, you could have very expensive hole in the ground if not properly constructed.
Once again, PLAN PLAN PLAN! This is the key to a project that stays within your budget and won't task your wallet or your back. It is very important to understand what it takes to succeed in pond ownership, and that's one of the reasons you are here. To get the information you need to make educated choices and decisions.
Let's talk about liner ponds first. This is the least expensive way to construct a pond. Many select the liner first then try to make a hole that matches those measurements. Unless you’re real good at measuring and know your stuff, we don't recommend it. We constantly have callers telling us that the liner is to small for the hole, now what? The what is purchasing seaming tape to join another section of liner to complete the job. That's no way to start. With that said, DIG THE HOLE FIRST, then contact us and we can tell you how to figure what size liner you will need to do the job.
Since we are on liner size let's give you the common formula to help you out. Generally speaking you want about one foot of liner laying around the perimeter of your pond when your finished. That gives you enough to bury in a shallow trench hiding the edge and also keeping water from going under the liner. Now, take the length of your pond at the widest point and add twice the depth plus 2 feet. Do the same with the width of the pond. Let us give an example:
You pond depth is 2 feet. So we take the length of 12 ft. add twice the depth, 4-ft. and add 2 more feet to that. That gives us a liner length of 18 ft. The width is 9 ft, so we add twice the depth, 4-ft. and add 2 ft. to that which equals gives us 15'. So we will need a liner that is 15' x 18'. Liner is generally sold is common lengths and less expensive then having someone hand cut a custom size so try to stay in the boundaries of those common sizes. Our example pond will need a liner 15-ft. x 20 ft., which is a standard size. You can look in the liner section to see the most common size liner for help. One last thing on liners, purchase a quality 45 mil EPDM water garden approved. EPDM is also made into roofing liner that has chemicals that will kill all the aquatic life in it. Be very careful who you purchase from as sadly there are companies out there that do just that. Contact the company first and ask questions. If you know what you’re talking about ahead of time, the less likely you are to end up with roofing material.
Better yet, check out PP or PPL liner. It's the liner for the next generation of ponds.
Well we have talked about everything but the actual money involved. Like we said before you can do it for $200 or $20,000. Planning ahead of time will save you money, plain and simple. One thing is for sure, if you study, plan and purchase products from trusted sources, you will get the best deal possible. Of course while we are on that subject, we have to get our two cents in here by saying we test and research everything that we sell. We don't sell 20 lines of products just because they are available. We have strict guidelines and we are in NO ONE'S pocket. If the product is top of the line, lives up to all the specs,m, nd is priced right, then we will offer it to you the consumer.
We simply do things differently than the masses and since we guarantee the lowest prices on what we sell...well you get the idea. Plan, research and make the right choices. And heck, even if you don't purchase from us, rest assured we are still here to help you in anyway we can. Strange? Not really, we just love ponds and the people who have them. Our premise is that if we do whatever it takes to help you in your new venture, just maybe you will buy from us or tell someone about us. And that's all any retailer can ask for!
